I may hate Valve's lack of communication, but many of their decisions have been to everyone's benefit, including theirs.
Nintendo, however, is an abhorrent company. Many of their decisions embarrass their developers, fans, and the late Satoru Iwata. Here's some proof. (Thread)

Many times in the past, Half-Life modders have been hired and contracted to create some of Valve’s most successful games of all time. TF2 and CS:GO need no introduction. They rake in millions for Valve.
Nintendo has deliberately circumvented modding in the past with Project M, despite its healthy competitive scene and benefits for charity through tournaments. After Nintendo began to involve itself in competitive Smash, the developers feared impending legal action and ceased ops.
They’re like this with fangames, too. Nintendo C&Ds so many fangames made not-for-profit and out of love. AM2R and Pokemon Prism were famously pulled from the Game Awards.
AM2R was taken down only after its 10-year dev cycle wrapped and it gained attention.

Satoru Iwata has since been quoted numerous times:
"It would not be appropriate if we treated people who did something based on affection for Nintendo as criminals."
This philosophy has since been lost on corporate Nintendo.

Valve, however, took one look at Black Mesa and authorized the game for sale on Steam, among other kind gestures. It is a ful reimagining of Half-Life, paying respect to and significantly evolving every aspect of its design. Dario Casali (longtime HL level designer) prefers it.
The return policy for the Valve Index is exceptionally lenient. They also offer an unparalleled refund program for games purchased, allowing you to refund any game under 2 hours of playtime and within 14 days of purchase, although even THIS is flexible.
Although Nintendo thankfully offers a one-year warranty on Nintendo Switch consoles, Nintendo does not offer refunds on any of their digital games whatsoever, and their proven hardware defect is apparently “not a real problem or hasn’t caused anyone any inconvenience."
It is.
Nintendo is adamant that piracy is a “worsening international problem.” Although this was directed at a hack seller, it casts a large shadow over the emulation scene.
So it’s about offering a better service than the pirates, eh? Well, if that's the case, then I'm pirating Nintendo's games from now on.
- $60 ports of old games
- No N64/GCN/Wii/GBA/DS offerings on Switch
- Many games yet to be re-released
- GCN games are expensive af on eBay

Super Mario 3D All-Stars will go down in history as one of the most disgusting games Nintendo has ever put out, with poor emulation (use Dolphin for 60fps), lack of options and features, a timed-release window, and a high price point being the major points of contention.
Most repulsive, however, is that it worked. It has sold over five million copies worldwide as of this tweet.
They could release these games separately after March, because otherwise, what will they tell investors about this little scheme?

Valve’s entire back catalogue (22 games) is available for purchase on Steam for less than the price of 3DAS. Developers at Valve have since worked tirelessly to make sure these games run on modern PCs.
Half-Life, despite being 22 years old, runs like a dream. Mods work too.

But of course, the most infamous recent event - Nintendo taking down The Big House due to its use of Slippi. Due to the current global pandemic, netplay has allowed many people to continue with Melee tourneys.
It is not illegal to do, but Nintendo wants people to think it is.

Valve is not perfect, but they are decidedly more consumer-friendly than the company that inspired its founder in the first place. I wonder how Gabe feels about Nintendo now?

As the days go by, the line between creative and corporate Nintendo blurs. Nintendo is the most profitable company in Japan, and yet they pull shit like this that hurts their image more than it helps, and it in no way harms their almost non-existent offerings of legacy content.
I love Zelda. I love Metroid. But expressing your love for these series through art is a crime in their eyes.
