I have heard from some that this school year is a "lost" year - that blanket statement doesn't sit right with me for many reasons, so what do you think?
While this year is not perfect, school before COVID wasn't either, the inequities were also there before but so much easier for many to ignore. But also, there is still critical learning going on, there is still teaching going on even if not in a typical sense
Kids and adults are learning a lot right now, even if it is not through traditional school, we are still growing as critical thinkers, we are still reflecting and analyzing, even if we have cut back on exposure to school-mandated content
And those lessons may not be lessons we had ever hoped for our children to learn, they may be lessons that will shape us for many years to come, they may be lessons centered in our family, our history, our lives, and school should make space for that and count it as learning too
So to say that this is a lost year is not just insulting, but also removed from the reality that learning looks different in many ways, as it should, and that we are all still learning, sometimes at a rapid pace
