HOW TO GET INTO EARL SWEATSHIRT: a thread
*playlist linked at the end*
ESSENTIAL ALBUMS:
if you’re looking to hear his best work and you’re not put off by experimental production, some rap songs is excellent. if you’re new to this style, i would recommend starting with i don’t like shit i don’t go outside.
OTHER PROJECTS:
earl has two projects not available on streaming: solace and his self-titled mixtape. if you like srs or idlsidgo, definitely check out solace. the title track on his self titled along with a few others are also worth a listen and are similar to tyler’s old work.
15 SONGS TO START WITH:
1. chum- this is the song that got me into earl. the instrumental matches his voice perfectly and it’s a great intro to his flow, style, and blunt lyricism
2. super rich kids- his feature on this song really shows his ability to produce an engaging and technically impressive verse at a relatively slow pace. his rhyming ability is really evident here, and it’s also very accessible
3. hive- earl & vince are a great duo, and this song shows off similar skill to super rich kids but in a darker tone that leans closer to his later work
4. wool- same as above, earl and vince are great together
5. really doe- easily one of earl’s best and one of my favorite features oat. everyone brings their own personality to this track and earl’s heavy and enunciated flow sharply contrasts that of kendrick or danny
6. whoa- great song to start with if you’ve been a tyler fan, in keeping with most of odd future’s work
7. e. coli- i have a separate thread breaking down this song, it’s a great example of earl’s lyricism that strengthened as his career continued but is more comprehensible than his later work that uses more abstract production https://twitter.com/_hiphoptalk/status/1329295578455531520
8. azucar- earl’s best song! the instrumental is less clear cut than the others so far on this list, but once you realize where he is sitting in the loop it’s an incredible listening experience
9. ontheway!- this was the first song to click for me off srs, primarily because it was easy to hear where he was over the best and the swing of it. i love how complex his emotion and message are on this track, a combination optimism and despair.
10. red water- i love how his repeated lyrics create a cyclical effect that paints him as trapped within these thoughts, over a beat that has the same impact
11. december 24- “that’s just how it is, you die and then you live huh? your heart and then your limbs break” is such a great line that i had to include this song
12. nowhere2go- such an addicting instrumental, and great lyrics as usual
13. cold summers- definitely less accessible and clear, but lyrically one of his best that can grow on you as you listen to it more
14. grief- less off putting sonically, but easily one of his darkest and most hopeless songs. this was the song that really made me appreciate his vulnerability.
15. el toro combo meal- mavi has an excellent verse on this song, but i also love how earl comes in with a completely different energy that demands attention from the listener
