🧵on change, wealth & investment transformation, & next generations...

Woke up this morning with the words finally in my head to say what I wanted about quitting my job of 20 years in October.

It was time. Okay, fine- it was past-time.

1/
I have been in #finserv longer than my kids have been alive & for too much time have seen incumbents (with one or two exceptions) drag their feet when it comes to the work that needs to be done to modernize the business.

2/
And, sure, everyone is paying attention now – #COVID19 was an unusually harsh wake-up call -- but the reality is we didn’t have to be this far behind consumer preferences...

There are plenty of us who have been squawking about it for years.

3/
And before you @ me it's "not that bad," consider that a ridiculous number of brokerage & trust transactions require you find a fax machine to finish what you started. (Not to mention an actual pen altho some of that is b/c regs haven't caught up.)

4/
So what will I do next?

Still figuring it out but for sure I want to execute on projects with people who have a sense of urgency about the impending generational turnover that will occur over the next decade, which WILL force accelerated disruption.

5/
I also know that I won’t work with people who care more about turf & titles & bickering over “who owns what” than getting shit done. (God knows there are way more talkers than do-ers in our biz, which I am completely over.)

6/
As many of you know, my POV is the generation in power – whoever it is – should listen to what the #NextGen has to say rather than dismiss them out of hand b/c they don't understand them or aren't like them.

7/
It goes without saying, if #Boomers had listened to #GenX about digital 15 years ago things wouldn’t be this bad; history, sadly, that is bound to repeat.

(Is this jealousy, arrogance, both?)

8/
Over the next few weeks, since I have free time for the first time in decades, I’ll drop threads on:

1. Why transformation of wealth & investment management (particularly at legacy firms) is hard but does not have to be impossible.

9/
2. More about why #videogaming / #eSports is the disruptor everyone should be paying attention to.
3. Why #GenZ's haptics of the smartphone make them the most potent disruptors the planet has seen to-date.

10/
I’ll do this while working on a business plan with a twist on how HNW/UHNW individuals can leverage the next generation to keep their own family firms relevant while [hopefully] inspiring a more purpose-driven life.

11/
Hope you’ll read, ask questions, and challenge what I say b/c you are a super engaged, smart bunch that I'm happy to know. (DMs open.)
