Where did this all even start? Ernie and Bert?? People had lots of problems with the thought of them being gay. Like
1. Can’t bring sex into a kids show
2. They’re met to show that people who are different can still be friends
3. People didn’t want their kids seeing gay people

Addressing 1- of course you can’t do that but nobody wanted to do that. All we wanted was queer representation. The hyper sexualization of the queer community is incredibly harmful as is reducing an identity to just sex. To treat us like that’s all we are is to take away our-
- humanity, to refuse to see us as people.
Addressing 2-
A. Everyone on Sesame Street are friends and they’re all very different. The show does not rely on solely Ernie and Bert to spread that message.
B. Can you not be in a relationship with someone and still be their friend? Can two different people not be in love?

Addressing 3- Seeing a gay couple isn’t going to turn your kid gay. I grew up without seeing queer people/relationships on the screen or in my books, but I’m still gay. All it did was make me feel isolated, and is that really what you want for your child?
And on the whole “puppets don’t exist below the waist so they can’t experience that” there are plenty of puppets in straight relationships, and puppets making jokes about being attracted to the opposite sex but what? They don’t count because straight is a sexual orientation-
- the way gay is? It’s the default to these people.
Queer people and relationships are more than just sex, there’s romance, there’s friendship, there’s nuance! Its not some rare, obscure thing. It’s real, it’s common and it’s beautiful.
In short gay people are just like straight people but cooler, and we deserve to be represented like everyone else
