Eight Thoughts about Chanukkah for Non-Jews:

1. Chanukkah is NOT the Jewish Christmas. So please, STOP trying to sell us creche scenes with dreidels and Jewish stars. You look ridiculous.

1/
2. Yes, the festival lasts for eight nights. We light one more candle each night as we increase the light of hope, dignity, and justice.

2/
Chanukkah is a relatively minor holiday. It’s ok. We’re good with it.

3/
“Happy Chanukkah” is a perfectly acceptable greeting to Jews.

If you wanna get uber-fancy & try it in Hebrew, you can say, "Chanukkah Sameyach."

4/
Jews do not agree on how to spell the holiday in English, so please, don’t worry about it. In Hebrew, we got it:

חֲנוּכָּה

6/
7. We eat a lot of fried foods during Chanukkah to remind us of the miracle of the oil, including latkes (potato pancakes), fried donuts & more (see above).

A holiday that centers fried foods?!?!? YUM!

7/
8. The true miracle of Chanukkah is that each of us is able to increase the light; each one of us embodies hope to illuminate a world with more dignity, compassion, & justice.

Happy Chanukkah!

PS: Chanukkah starts this year on 12/10 at Sundown.
