Oh is David Sedaris being an asshole? Let me share my experience, starting with a photo.
Scott's mom went to see him at a reading or signing or something. I can't remember. Anyway. She got his books and asked him to sign two, one for me and one for Scott. The previous photo? That's how he signed mine. At Christmas. As a gift.
Why?

"Desiree? What is she, a stripper? That's the name of someone you date, not marry."

And so he decided to tell me to get an abortion.

Scott's mom was so upset in the car trying to decide if she should give the book to me.
She did, because I consented, and we made a joke of it.

But I haven't read it. And he's a huge asshole. And I'm not surprised he's being a huge asshole today, especially about service workers, especially from the place of privilege he is in.

The end.
This is the most I've thought abt Sedaris and I don't want to anymore so I'm flipping the switch off.

He drew a candy cane (badly) in Scott's book, FYI, so the argument that truer fans get more offensive dedications is... weird.
I saw an interesting QRT and went through some replies and you know I've noticed? Most nebative experiences are at the expense of women. Dedications telling men in their lives they're pregnant, telling 14yo girls to lose their virginity, to get abortions, etc.

Shocking, I know.
I'm not calling for canceling or whatever. I know I'm not supporting his work and haven't, so nothing changes. It's just disappointing, I suppose, when people who I expect used to punch up with their jokes come to punch down so reflexively
