great notes courtesy of @Nutlope:
- at more senior levels, you need soft skills, technical skills are only 25% of the criteria
- tech strategy is important because it's important to know the bigger picture of what you're coding

- you will have the opportunity to work across the stack long term if you have a 30 year career, zoom out if you feel trapped
- check engineering ladder of your company to know what they (explicitly) value. if one doesn't exist, help define one!! https://twitter.com/swyx/status/1242311794921635840?s=20

Don't let things happen to you, make things happen. Network outside your company and/or make a name for yourself in the industry.

When to branch out and when to focus?
Go deep, THEN go broad. Make sure you have a toolkit to be able to solve any problem (minimum spanning set). Be confident in your tools before you move on.

How to choose what to write? How to make time for writing?
Three strikes rule: Anytime you refer to an idea more than 3 times (especially in person), write it down. Even if there's already a canonical post on it, you can put your own commentary and link to it!
