Update in my understanding:
•Ppl can only hold themselves accountable. You can’t force them to be accountable
•The folks who are in community with this person, who they feel beholden to, are the only ones who can create an environment where ppl are expected to grow & change https://twitter.com/queeringpsych/status/1143548160272416768

If the ppl around the person (who did harm or who abused) wanna make excuses, ignore the situation, etc because they like the person, the person is attractive, or has some community power, etc
Change won’t happen & it sets the scene for more harm & more abuse...and more silence

And this is part of what makes accountability & change so hard.
Due to the way current systems & systemic oppressions are set up, not a lot of people are creating the environment for folks who harm or folks who abuse/oppress to change. There’s no immediate power gained in it

Ppl think accountability/justice is a thing that happens from the outside b/c the State & current “criminal justice system” fosters that idea to keep ppl in power
Accountability comes from within. It has to start in families, friend groups, communities, etc & spread into policy
