Diffusing a student and family stress bomb through academic support strategies. (A THREAD)
Early data shows likely high numbers of failures and poor grades across the country. This added to student mental health issues and family COVID challenges could fuel major stress fires.

I know as teachers we don’t give grades, students earn them. However, I think we should all consider adjusting the goalposts for grading in a pandemic. I think we should extend grace and patience on grades to help students find a pathway to passing and success.

A 0 on a 100 point scale is honestly the equivalent of academic corporate punishment.
Consider- Allowing for late work to get turned in for partial credit. This helps provide a pathway to avoiding failure passing and it encourages assignments designed as rungs on learning ladder.

When there is merit consider and incomplete instead of a failing grade. This gives students a chance and a potential reprieve from family drama over the holidays. Generally I have found students and families very motivated to clear up an incomplete over the holidays.

Consider final projects instead of final exams. Lower pressure & allows for drafts & checkpoints.
I love final projects they:
often demonstrate more growth than exams and allow students a lot of flexibility to be creative in the project. When inspired students do amazing work.
