TW Rape mention//

It's not really about forgiveness imo. For me personally, I can't forgive the person who raped me because they haven't taken accountability for it. https://twitter.com/TheGrapevineTV/status/1335631400687595521
But yes, I have been, and a large chunk of the abolitionists I know have been. For the majority of us I don't think we're guided by "forgiveness," we are guided by naming things for what they are. So like me wanting to abolish prisons is about me
recognizing that they perpetuate sexual harm instead of ending it. That is more central to me and my work than forgiving my rapist.
Abolition isn't strictly about being fluffy or like..having empathy for every single person, especially those who abused you. It's about being materialist.
So no, I'm not going to hug my rapist and tell him he's a good person, and I probably wouldn't lead a campaign to free him individually. But I WILL acknowledge that if he were to ever be incarcerated, it is because he got swept up into an anti Black, ableist, classist system
that isn't interested in keeping me safe, and in fact hurts me.
And ALSO, different survivors want different things. Some may feel healing through forgiveness. That's okay.
