Anyone that knows me and quite a few that don't know that I like to drink... But no one will ever understand how much I love pubs... Back in the early 90s I had my first complete breakdown.. I don't recommend it...

Like everyone else I felt and was completely on my own... In a city like London it's truly unbelievable how alone you can be... I found solace and eventually peace of mind in a pub.... It was a shithole.... No decent music, shite TV and cheap watered down beer...
I loved that pub.... Mostly sat on my own but when I felt (drunk) confident enough to talk to other people, they talked to me... I don't think I would have got through my first breakdown without the William the 4th in bakers arms... But as you all know... It wasn't the pub.
It was the clientele.... The down to earth ppl that go to a pub for their own reasons... A couple of pints, a bit of company, a break from the inundation of bad shit on the news.. A laugh... To meet someone that will say hello to them....
I walk past my local pub and its closed and it breaks my heart... It just feels wrong... (more about this later).... Anyway... I've taken up fishing for my mental health.... Funny thing is... 2 men in there 60s and 70s have started to time their walks to meet me....
They don't see their friends anymore coz the pub is closed.... These men aren't alcoholics... The pub was their social life... Their network and its been taken away from them... So they walk down to the pier in the hope that I'll be there to talk to someone... Anyone...
They have no one else.... At all..... Just me (god help them) and we talk fish and fish sizes and the weather and yesterday and then they go home alone and I feel shit....
Now let's talk pubs... Specifically "wet" pubs... My friends (I met in a pub) run my local pub... They are fantastic... They run that pub like a f*cking hospital... It's amazingly covid aware... They even taught the older clients how to scan f*cking barcodes...
They are awesome... The pub is awesome... It's a f*cking support group for loads of lonely people.... And it's closed down... All the gyms are open... The shops are open... Last time I was in a shop I didn't have to scan a bar code, sign my name add and phone number
... Keep my social distance... They follow the rules to the letter and yet here we are. They've been shut down and told they're getting a grand to tide them through for a month.... I'm in the middle of nowhere and talking about a very not busy pub... The rent is closer to 2 grand
So whoever came up with this back of fag box shit should be shot... The lives he/she is damaging are uncountable... Wear a mask, take precautions etc.. Yes... But old town Margate is not and never will be central London, Manchester or f*cking Liverpool...
