So annoying when Boomers say Millennials can't buy homes & pay student loans b/c we're "lazy, don't want to work, & eat avocado toast." Okay Boomers, here's why that's NOT the case.
I looked at the 1940 Census, the 1st decade Boomers were born. Let's look at Mr. Joseph Beward:
I looked at the 1940 Census, the 1st decade Boomers were born. Let's look at Mr. Joseph Beward:
Joseph supported a wife, 4 kids, and OWNED a home. His highest education completed was 6th grade(!), and he worked as a machinist on the railroad. His wife did not work. In today's money, he earned $33K (about $15/hour) and his house cost $37K.
Back then, an uneducated person could earn a living wage, support a family of 6 and own a home. Wouldn't that be nice? If Millennials had the same economy, EVERY. DAMN. MILLENIAL. would own a home, afford multiple children, & have no money issues. Contrary to boomer belief...
Millennials are VERY hard workers, arguably harder workers than they were. Many of us work multiple jobs, 80 hours/week just to get by. Plus, we need a college degree for even the most basic jobs, so we have to take out student loans which we're stuck with for years. The cost...
of homes and education have skyrocketed while wages have not kept up. It's so annoying when boomers boast "By the time I was 30 I had a house and no debt!" Yeah...if we enjoyed the economy of the 40's - 70's, we would have the same. Y'all truly lived the "American Dream."
In conclusion: our problem is not avocado toast or owning a fridge, it's that we're fighting a terrible system and economy. The math just doesn't work. Before you judge millennials, know that we are a hard-working bunch, crippled by terrible circumstances. Thanks for reading.
@ThisIsALogin @wilboandthewads I think this is a right up your alley based on your interests!
This research was actually really fun and interesting to do. If you want to see the 1940 Census (and possibly have your jaw drop at how good they had it) here's the link. It's also interesting because it's all hand-written. https://www.archives.gov/research/census/1940/research/census/1940/general-info
The reason you can't see the detailed 1950 and beyond Census is because there is a "72 Year Rule" to protect people's privacy. Every ten years, they release Census data of the following decade. So can see the 1950 Census in 2022.
