Today is the anniversary of the mass shooting 31 years ago at L’ecole Polytechnique in Montreal that killed 14 women. It is also the 16th day of the 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence. /1
Normally I post every day during this period, but it takes a toll and this year I felt like being stuck at home alone reliving my own trauma to try and support others in finding safety was pushing the edges of my ability to cope after so many months alone. /2
I feel bad to say that but it’s also the truth and truth is what we need more of to end gender-based violence. /3
We also need more allies who aren’t also themselves victims of gender-based violence. We need you to raise your voices and take action for all those who still can’t or who are exhausted by the effort. /4
Thank you for those that do, and for those that haven’t yet please speak up in honour of the 14 victims, the many others who have died and the tens of thousands who endure, waiting for governments to see gender-based violence as the crisis it is. /5
