12 Key Highlights from United’s 3-1 Win over West Ham in the Premier League: the good and the not so good.
1. Struggling Against Press.

(A) WHU were compact centrally — focused on preventing MUN’s ball progression.

(B) WHU crowded AWB (pressing trigger) & marked VDB out the game.

(C) MUN sloppy in possession, individual errors = turnovers.

(D) No manipulation of space, too narrow.
2. Backwards.

Excellent *quick* passes:

(A) Lindelof breaks the first line of WHU’s press.

(B) Pogba drags two with him.

(D) McTominay bypassing the midfield.

(E) Then: backwards. Pogba asking for the ball here — space centrally not exploited.

3. MUN Using Flanks to Progress *Quickly.*

(A) Didn’t give time for WHU to organize their defensive shape and recover from pressing.

(B) MUN using a triad of three players, one touch passes between Greenwood & AWB.

(C) Look at Cavani tucked in between CB’s. Good pass.
4. Press Forcing Turnovers.

(A) Aggressive man to man marking — leaving WHU with no safe passing option except to the keeper.

(B) Keeper forced to go long pressured by Martial.

(C) MUN force the turnover with Lindelof winning the aerial duel — (getting better)
5. Slight Response.

Central progression struggle. Tweak?

(A) VDB drifted to pockets of space in the flanks.

(B) AWB & Mason holding width on the touchline. Precise quick passing triad — dragged players: space centrally.

(D) McTom sloppy: loses the ball.
6. Goal conceded.

Like I said — MUN do not create enough of a hindrance for the opposition to win the ball in set pieces. Let’s begin:

(A) Rice here wins the ball easily: unmarked.

(B) Pogba too static.

(C) Telles fails to track his runner.

Needs *massive* improvement.
7. The Personnel Response.

With Rashford > *more* runs challenging WHU’s backline — forced them to push back.

With Bruno > directness on the ball and movement in between the lines.

The danger of both afforded MUN space to bypass WHU’s defensive phases and midfield.
8. Ball Carrying.

Pogba picks up the ball from his own box, carries it and uses his physicality to shield.

He had the highest ball carries and highest progressive distance of any MUN player. First half — little runs to supply.

Initiator.
9. Equalizer.

Bruno was excellent here.

He initially dribbles past one player but notice how many players are attracted to his dangerous movement.

WHU’s backline was focused on containing him — therefore Pogba had a clear run to space, no time for WHU to tackle/intercept.
10. Starboy ⭐️

A. Bruno runs to receive *behind* the two WHU players — back-heel pass.

B. Greenwood’s movement is excellent. Once Telles receives he immediately turns in behind — WHU lost him.

C. The touch, turn & deadly finish. Doesn’t give keeper anytime to set himself.
11. Quick Bypass.

This all came from the back — Maguire’s excellent line breaking pass.

Five WHU players were now bypassed. Great summary of the second half tempo: directness.

Look at Rashford and how he runs into the middle to receive Bruno’s through pass.
12. RashFlash. ⚡️

(A) Maguire wins the aerial duel.

(B) Pogba’s great control — great pass. Bruno in between the lines *always* to receive.

(C) From there, Mata notices the space & begins his run to receive from Bruno.

(D) An excellent pass to Rashy’s run — beautiful chip.
