I’m old enough to be a young grandpa but still young enough to have fresh memories of my 20’s so I know that getting old can really screw with your values. That movie children of men, where everyone loses it because humans may go extinct? That’s a lot of people in their 70s
If you were alive 35 years ago you know that you all our norms have been overturned at least twice since then. If you were alive 65 years ago, then double that. Segregation wasn’t that long ago! Mtv wouldn’t play any black music at first. 1st open gay character on tv was like 84?
Everything straight white folks in their 70s thought was true about social constructs and values has been completely destroyed by now. Earth is an alien planet to them in 2020, the world they knew is never coming back, and they are literally dying to hold on to any of it they can
This grief for their world makes them willing to destroy ANYTHING it can because, like a snake with its head cut off, all it can do is bite whatever is in range, hoping to have some sort of last gasp of snake-ness before the oxygen in its brain runs out
My point is if you feel like some of the older folks in your life are in a death cult and have lost empathy for anyone outside their immediate circle, you may be right. That’s what happens when end of the world despair takes hold. They feel apocalyptic and they want us to too
