The biggest joke I’ve seen is people lauding Trump for standing up to China. The asinine trade war aside, Trump’s handling of the election loss, touting conspiracy theories, and claiming fraud without evidence are only helping to advance China’s continued rise on the world stage
As our own President and his followers continue to quite literally undermine our most democratic process (elections) with no credible evidence time and time again, China just sits back while we shoot ourselves in the foot. I am not at all implying that China is a world savior.
They are quite literally putting Muslim people in camps and torturing them. However, the Chinese Belt and Road initiatives are building economic relationships and filling a global leadership role traditionally held by the US. (Pakistan is a prime example). I am also not saying
that @JoeBiden will be able to come in and balance the scales. China was on the rise before Trump, and the last four years have only continued this trajectory (even with COVID). This idiotic perpetuation of voter fraud that the courts keep (thankfully) striking down
is having huge ripples outside of domestic politics. How the GOP is allowing this to continue is beyond comprehension. I think they are afraid their Republican base is so loyal to Trump that even supporting actual election results at this point will cause them to lose reelection
This whole situation shows that most of our elected officials (Dems or Reps) don’t care about our country. They care about themselves and retaining their little slice of their pie, even if it means undermining the system that got them elected. Term limitations would help, but
this goes deeper into the character of our society. We have amazing, altruistic people throughout this country. We also have people who can’t be bothered to wear a mask in a global pandemic. Collective good in any capacity is viewed as socialist or oppressive. I keep wondering
how the Greatest Generation would view our selfishness, divisiveness, and in some cases widespread delusion. The very America that Trumpsters wanted to get back to fought fascists, grew victory gardens, lived with rations, turned their lights off at night, etc.
If the government asked people to turn off their lights even to prevent attacks today, somehow it would get twisted that it was a war on Christmas and their inherent freedoms were being oppressed.
Bottom line, the US is no longer a unilateral power on the global stage and political infighting of this magnitude only continues to weaken our position, particularly in comparison to China. Thanks for coming to my Sunday morning TED talk. Happy holidays and wear a mask.
