This has been filling my feed. First, I acknowledge that as a Black woman politician, Gordon likely endures countless micro aggressions daily, let alone outright racism + misogyny. Having to deal with micro aggressions regularly may affect the way all other things are received /1
But she is nonetheless adhering tightly to the Manitoba PC MLA playbook here, like Kelvin Goertzen, like Cameron Friesen, like Brian Pallister, in displaying a gross misunderstanding of how democracy works. Elected officials are not “those in charge” of citizens / 2
And citizen inquiry is not insubordination. Democracy is difficult and elected officials must master dealing with all kinds of people, and so it’s not going to be the job for everyone, especially people who haven’t received professional training in how to receive criticism / 3
There are important other questions since this tweet chain, such as whether Gordon participated in the drive in services that broke MB orders, and why she didn’t speak up proactively publicly about her position given her membership in Springs Church would invariably come up /4
Manitoba is immersed within an extremely painful 2nd wave of COVID only for the blinding arrogance of her party, in believing they knew better than 8 months of worldwide experience and expertise. / 5
She and other MLAs propping up with party, should be prepared to respond to difficult questions posed by the people they work for (Manitobans), especially when it’s difficult, because that is an integral part of the job description. That’s how democracies function. / end
