The new farmer bills has caused millions of farmers to protest in India 🇮🇳 but what are these bills and what is the intention and rational behind them? In this thread I will do my best to explain!
Firstly, the main problem farmers have about the bills is that MSP (minimum support price) could be withdrawn in the future. MSP is exclusive to only product like wheat 🌾 and rice 🍚 (mainly in North India). Which is why most of the protests are in this area.
MSP came about in the Green Revolution (technological and reform of India’s farmers caused by gov). It’s intentions were good and to improve farmers lives. However the consequences created drawbacks despite initial prosperity.
The major drawback was that it created a dependence on wheat and rice. The wheat rice mono-cropping patten has damaging effects for the environment and therefore for Punjab.
The MSP means in the governments eyes that wheat and rice which shouldn’t be bought for such a high price (as the MSP is supported by government money) is causing a waste in money and is damaging the environment esp in regards to water 💧.
From the POV of the farmers it is the government threatening a prosperous source of income that they rely on. As we can see both gov and farmers feel very strong about this hence you have people that support either side having such strong opposing views.
It is FAR TOO EARLY to say whether the bills will benefit anyone. We cannot have a strong opinion and say big corps WILL exploit farmers or that farmers will benefit as it the abolishing of mandis (where farmers sell)will allow them greater freedom therefore less gov interference
This is why I don’t trust anyone with strong views on it - how can you say you know what will happen when it’s so vague! Although one thing that is true- BJP and Modi have some shame for not being democratic about the bills! You cannot thrust the bills on farmers !
Why did government not invite farmers in their creation of the bill? Why did they want to bypass democratic institutions and just act like a dictator by making them accept it? Imo this isn’t because of some malevolent intention but is reflective of Modi’s impatience and arrogance
I do believe that the bills are well intentioned and not some evil capitalist long term agenda. However, the morality of the bill is further questionable in the eyes of the opponents when gov sanction abuse towards farmers by beating them and firing water cannons!
What is the gov thinking!? Why would you not be smart and invite farmers before? Why would you then fire at them? This reminds me of a well intentioned parent who behaves in toxic ways.
As for people attacking the government saying it will ruin Punjab. 33% of Punjabs pop are Dalits (untouchables) they are landless. Furthermore, not all Jatt farmers grow wheat and rice. This is true for Hoshiarpur which is the largest district in Punjab.
Large parts of Malwa grow cotton. Meaning most farmers won’t even be impacted by the bill. In addition, the smallest farmers don’t even sell via MSP mechanism. The majority of the protests are medium sized peasantry who will be impacted and rely on MSP.
What’s also interesting is a lot of people attacking Modi for the bill accuse government of poisoning Punjabs soil and diminishing its water reserves by encouraging the wheat rice mono-cropping. Shouldn’t you be happy about the then!? 🙄
In the long run what I feel is certain is the bill will benefit Punjab and Haryana’s water and soil reserves/quality. However, the way of going about it in undemocratic ways, beating farmers and the overall fuck up is just pathetic
Honestly not to go off topic who can support BJP they are such fuck ups? Also gov need to assure farmers that they won’t be exploited by corporations by preventing a monopoly by them over wheat-rice.
Although what is ideal is if farmers stop making wheat and rice- and focus on paddy , cotton and sugercane.
What do I think ? I think BJP are fucking dumb , Modi is an autocratic twat, and the bills should be taken back in order to create something that was well intentioned as these bills were originally but should be done in democratic ways. Also a bill that helps environment .
