To ignore the queer Tamil community's concerns and critique about #FunnyBoyTheFilm so blatantly is pretty much saying 'we don't actually give a fuck about y'all and y'all don't have enough power to stop us from making money on this project'. It's so violent.
This is a reminder that there is a vast difference between making work about queer people for queer people and making it for their oppressors so you can get career clout for performing solidarity while actually erasing and silencing the communities you're pretending to support.
And I get that for a lot of people it's easier to engage on issues like this when the perpetrators are white, but I urge you to decenter whiteness and pay attention to the other violences slipping past. Deepa Mehta literally works with a government that committed genocide, ffs.
That's not a deal breaker for Ava Duvernay, apparently. Take a look at your faves with a critical eye, I beg you. This culture of unlooking true things is wild and y'all need to stop playing into it. WE'RE TALKING ABOUT GENOCIDE. Jesus fucking Christ. Go read @varathas and learn.
