I’ve been resuming work on chapter 8 of Manic, Autistic Superhero! I tend to do the first step of each chapter after finishing the last, so the panels are set up with the sketches. Next step is the longest, line work.
I’ve probably explained this before, but I like explaining things. Especially things I control, or made up. So when I do a chapter of this comic, I start with a sketch version in a sketchbook. I don’t scan or start digitizing it until the entire chapter is done.
Once the sketch ver is 100% done, I scan all 27 pages, and the cover. Then I construct a blank version of the layout in #comiclife and export it to my image editor. I use the blank panels to clip the sketch version into sketch panels.
Next I add digital line art to all the panels. Usually between 100 and 150 panels. While doing the line art, I use many layers, sometimes I name them, sometimes I don’t, I go though phases where everything needs a layer name, and the. Phases where I don’t care.
Once every panel has line art, for both main focus and background, I enter the color and effects step. I use flat colors most of the time, only adding shading for story effects. Effects include, but aren’t limited to, blurring, glows, and fancy brushes.
After all panels are completed,I can finish up fast!I import all the panels to #comiclife and use the app to add word bubbles, text effects and narration squares.I use the sketchbook script to remember the words,if anyone here has seen the scrip,I just write the words over the art
This brings me to an interesting opinion on comics. Some peeps can write a comic script with just art,and no text.Apparently the text is implied from the art?I don’t get that,it could be my autism, but the whole medium of comics is saying things that can’t be with just art or words
That’s not to say, that those comics aren’t good, or even exceptional. It’s just that I could never write them that way. I fall back on exact conversations, on single words...anyway, if you can write comics with just pics and then make a finished thing with both, I appreciate you
