Just a reminder that even tho @Target is more expensive than Walmart you should shop there anyway. I recently saw someone saying targets activism is performative and here’s why that’s not exactly true!

1. They stood w the lgbtqia community before it was “cool.” They included transgender (who are often left out) individuals in their discussion and made policy changes to allow trans individuals to use the restrooms that match their identity.
Despite receiving backlash for this new policy, target decided to launch a take pride campaign shortly after, doubling down on their stance that they stand with the community.
2. Target also stands with the black community and black lives matter. In the wake of George Floyd’s death, target property was destroyed and taken. Target still released an empathetic statement saying that they stand with the community. This is not new though.
I worked at target in ofallon during the time Michael brown was murdered. When protests arose, numerous target stores in the area were “hit” for merchandise and property destruction. Our stores solution? “Code purple.”
Our codes were usually red/green/yellow based on emergency situations. Code purple meant if this translated to our store, we were to all go into the break room and lock the door and *wait* until people left. I don’t even remember my manager ever saying cops were in the protocol
3. Target makes it easier for smaller black and vegan brands to get into their stores. If you shop at target, you know they have wide ranges of product for kinky, curly, and textured hair. Small black businesses that I buy from also claim that target is one of the only major
Retailers that will give them the time of day and not make it impossible to sell their product there. This includes but is probably not limited to: black owned hair products, skincare, and even vegan+eco friendly feminine hygiene products.
4. They are body positive. Target has long carried gorgeous clothing lines for plus sized women (Ava+viv). They also market their swimwear lines and advertise that every body is a swimsuit body while using models of different body types and ethnic backgrounds.
5. They actually treat their workers well. When I worked there, I started at $7.75/hr and made $9.13/hr after working there for about a year. During that time I was never scheduled past 9pm because it was against policy to schedule anyone in highschool that late.
They also catered good food for major holidays that we had to work and sent employees home with the leftovers. We were always pushed to take our breaks and lunches were mandatory and enforced at 6 hours or before.
We had a nightly “huddle” where the managers would bring us snacks and let the Starbucks barista make extra samples for the team. Management was always kind.
Aside from treating their employees well, they also encouraged individuality. I was shocked at orientation to learn that I could have unnatural colored hair, piercings, and visible tattoos. Eventually, target released a line of jeans and even let us trade in the khakis.
My point is just that target is adaptable & has been for many years, at least in my experience and from light research. Walmart might be cheaper & at the end of the day YES they’re both billion dollar corporations. But I’d rather spend my $ at the store that promotes personhood.
Even if it’s not profitable.
