BAYLOR DEFENSE REVIEW vs OU.

A truly remarkable performance. Let's see what they did.

The 1st play demonstrates they were all in on stopping G-T counter. Look at #34. Lined up from depth outside the OT, not where he usually is, so that he can get max force against pullers.
2nd & 8, passing down. OU goes with their patented cross'n'up trying to hit Stoops, Baylor covers it perfectly.

This play really demonstrates why they moved WBK to DE and have Logan/Jones at JACK. Watch #34 Logan drop here. Great athlete. And it allows WBK to pass rush.
Nifty scheme here from OU. It's like a hybrid short trap G-T counter, a constraint to keep teams from overplaying G-T counter. Logan does well, but both ILBs end up in same gap. Either Doyle attacks wrong shoulder or Abram should've scraped over the top.
As we saw several times last night, Rattler is really good at squaring his shoulders and delivering an accurate ball after scrambling. He's always looking to throw. Why he doesn't throw to Stoops to field IDK. Once again look at #52 M. Jones drop. It's a must for Baylor JACKs.
Bubble RPO, Rattler is reading the apex LB (#28 Abram Smith). OU isn't intentionally letting the backside DE free here like you sometimes see in zone read, this is just a mistake by their OT/OG. Jones is so good off the edge, glad he's finally playing JACK.
This is a sort of split zone that is 100% designed to bounce into D or E gap. I think Abram is locked in on the pulling Hall here b/c he is cautious about him leaking out into the flat on PA so I think he plays it too hesitantly. Good job by Texada not getting stiff armed.
It is really hard to cover this long in the red zone (as we saw later in the game). Just great stuff. Look at the way Baylor is communicating on all these switch/rub routes, they are so well coached.
Oh hell yes it's the Pitre possession. This is ELITE explosion. Watch how quickly he turns from scraping for a possible run to play to just exploding laterally and forward by Hall. He's a pro. OU fans probably were annoyed with Hall, but Pitre has been doing this to everyone.
What makes Pitre a pro is that he can go from dominating TEs/H-backs on the LOS to erasing WRs in space. Baylor's in Tampa 2 here, Pitre never takes his eyes off the QB and just flattens the WR. Not a good play into Tampa unless you have elite WR blocking.
Alright, so OU has learned that Baylor is gonna be bringing Pitre (the apex) off the edge from the field. Natural answer is quick hitters to the field. This is why you recruit speed. Abram is still learning his way at LB, but it helps when you run a 4.5. He prevents a big play.
OU looking to take a shot on 2nd and long. A sort of max protect. OU runs 3 verticals. Good coverage from all 3 primary coverage guys. Texada stays on top of Rambo the whole time so Rambo sits, an awesome throw but Texada does good to break it up.
3rd and long, OU is running a bunch of stick routes, I think it is the same play that Stoops had the awesome catch on on the first drive. One of the few times all year Baylor only brings 3. Good rush from WBK forces Rattler to flush early. Great stuff.
Everyone on OU's OL slides L except the RT, looks like he had the wrong protection call. Brutal missed assignment for OU.
I was really high on Doyle entering the year and have been hard on him this year, but it seems clear he was playing injured for most of the yearr, he has looked so much better the past few games. Great job to attack and shed here. M. Jones too hesitant to attack his blocker.
Lol at Pitre here, this is awesome. But seriously, this is how you defend G-T counter. You just create chaos in the backfield. It's not as much about gap integrity as it is blowing blockers up. Exactly what Aranda said: blow up the puller, allow LB to scrape over top. Perfecto.
When your LBs are aggressive against the run it opens you up to plays like this that OU has eaten people alive with for years. But the throw is inaccurate and Baylor will continue to take their chances.
Rattler owes Stoops dinner after this one, a ball that should've been picked if not for Stoops' effort. Rattler is looking to hit the stick route to the top but it's covered. Baylor again playing rush 3 / drop 8 which they haven't done much this year, surprised OU no doubt.
These are boring plays but they're why Baylor was so successful: dominating OU on 1st down standard runs. OU has had enough of BU blowing up their gap schemes so they move to zone with an RPO reading the apex (Pitre). Pitre stays flat footed and everyone does their job in the box
Most of OU's passing success came on routes like this attacking the gap between the deep 1/3 defender (the CB) and the seam-curl-flat defender (the apex, here Morgan). If you can time this up and have a QB who can make the throw, it's very hard to defend.
Really the majority of Pitre's mistakes then year have been on plays like this where he attacks with the wrong leverage. He trusts his eyes and make the right read here but needs to maintain outside leverage. If he stays outside here it's either incomplete or a 3 yard loss.
Riley is losing his mind on the sideline here, tough to tell exactly what form. It looks like he wants that boundary WR to keep going vertical. But he's very upset
