Something that is entirely unsurprising from the terf crowd is their total silence on intersex babies and kids, who are *actually* given surgeries and hormones that they cannot consent to (some surgeries are even undertaken without the parents’ knowledge and records expunged)
Many of these surgeries are genital and entirely aesthetic, to make the kids look “more normal” and “allow” the parents to assign them “boy” or “girl” “without complication”. There are some intersex conditions that are treated with hormones at young age. It is rarely adequately
Explained to the child what is happening to them, what will happen to them as a result, and the question of consent is entirely given to the parents. The thing that TERFs are afraid of DOES happen, but it is not transgender people or our allies perpetrating it, and we should ALL
Be allies to the intersex community by speaking out about non-consensual non-essential surgeries and hormones forced upon intersex people.
I was giving a talk to some medical students back when I was chair of the LGBT society, mostly covering things to be aware of when treating trans people like “trans women can get breast cancer” and “trans men are at higher risk for heart disease than cos women” and I had one
Slide about intersex conditions because there can be some overlap with like “this person could be overlooked for these conditions because of gendered assumptions doctors make asked on appearance” and one boy was like “oh, we had a lecture on abnormal birth genitals last week, I’m
meant to give a presentation. What should I do?” And I was honestly so taken aback. I told him what I knew about the activism that intersex advocates are doing, the causes they’re fighting for (largely education of doctors, bodily autonomy, recovery of lost or destroyed records)
And points him towards some resources. It’s wild how little people know about intersex rights issues, or that it’s an issue at all.
God there are so many typos in this thread, I’m so sorry
if you want to learn more about intersex rights advocacy this is a good resource: http://oiiuk.org/# AFAIK there aren’t any intersex advocate orgs in Ireland right now but follow @IrelandIntersex and @TENI_Tweets
