#nationaldayofremembrance in 2020, 145 women and girls have died at the hands of someone they know. Intimate partner/domestic violence can not be ignored.Nova Scotia witnessed the depth of its insidious nature when an abuser gunned down 22 people in April. https://femicideincanada.ca/2020_victims
Today is Canada’s #NationalDayOfRemembrance. On this day, we remember 14 women who were massacred at #ecolepolytechnique in 1989. We also remember that gender based violence requires attention.
• 1 in 5 women in Canada is or has been the victim of violence (intimate partner/domestic violence/dating violence).
• Indigenous women are 6 times more likely to be murdered than non-indigenous women.
• Every 6 days, a woman in Canada is killed by a man she knows.
• 3500+ women accesses emergency shelters nightly because it’s not safe at home.
• The UN states that 1 in 3 women world wide is the victim of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).
• It’s estimated that 50% of all IPV go unreported.
• 80% of victims of gender based violence are women.

Today, & everyday, take note of the women you see & know that many of them have suffered at the hands of someone they knew & loved.
Remember & honour those who no longer have a voice, our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women #MMIW. Honour them by using your voice and your actions to help raise awareness and stop gender based violence.
