🚀 DARNELL MOONEY - moon landing incoming 🚀

(Thread)

Mooney is one of the most interesting players from the NFL draft after being drafted in the 5th round (173-WR24) by the Chicago Bears!

He’s flashed his upside on occasions but yet to fully breakout, so let’s dive in...
• College stats •

Mooney had a solid if unspectacular college career with the Tulane Green Wave’s, his final stats after 4 years were as follows:

46 games - 154/2572/19

He led the Green Wave’s in receiving yards in both his junior and senior seasons.

But it was at the...
2020 NFL combine where Mooney really caught people’s eyes with a blazing 4.38s 40 yard dash time!

His drill percentiles were as follows:
40 yard dash - 4.38s (90%tile)
Vertical jump - 37” (71%tile)
Broad jump - 124” (74%tile)
Bench press - 9 reps (9%tile)

This impressive...
Performance led to the Bears trading up to grab Mooney in the 5th round (pick 173) by giving up both their 6th round picks (196 & 200) plus their 7th (233) to get him plus a 7th round pick (227) in return.
• Career So Far •

Mooney made his NFL debut in Week 1 Vs DET where he turned 3 receptions into 38 yards.

That solid start led to his snap sharing increasing from 34% to 61% the following week against NYG where he put up similar stats but recorded his 1st NFL TD: 3/36/1

...
Since then, Mooney has continued to be more involved in this offense. His targets began to increase and between Week 3 - Week 6 he averaged:
6 targets, 3 receptions & 31 yards per game

In Week 7 - Week 12 his snap share increased even more going from an average...
Of 61% in the first half of the season to 88% in the second half as he arguably establishes himself as the WR2 in Chicago alongside the WR1 Allen Robinson.

Week 8 has been the highlight of his Rookie season so far where he went for: 5/69/1 against the tough NO defense!

...
Some of the key stats from his season so far:
• 11 games - 65 targets 36/385/2 (10.7 ypc)
• Air yards per game - 85.6 🔥
• % team air yards - 26.5%
• Avg depth of target - 14.5 yards

Bears team snap % (last 4 week)
Robinson - 87%
MOONEY - 72%
Miller - 58%

So as mentioned...
Mooney seems to have taken over the Bears WR2 role, being used opposite Robinson on the outside as the Bears depth threat as you can see from his average air yards per game!

Right Outside -34%
Left Outside -26.3%
Right Slot -18.7%
Left Slot -17.6%

Outside 60.3% Vs 36.3% Slot
• Future Outlook •

So first, let’s take a look at his remaining schedule (pass defense rank) + (avg points allowed to all opposing WRs) via @FTNFantasy:

Vs DET - 28th (33.0) 🔥
Vs HOU - 22nd (32.5) 🔥
@ MIN - 12th (35.7) 🔥
@ JAX - 30th (33.2) 🔥
Vs GB - 18th (28.3) 👎
The Bears and Mooney’s remaining schedule is very tasty from a fantasy perspective.

While Allen Robinson is likely going to be the main guy to benefit from it, Mooney should be able to finish the season strongly and has the potential to put up 1 or 2 boom weeks!

His outlook...
beyond this season is also really interesting with Bears star WR Allen Robinson’s contract running out after this season.

If the Bears don’t re-sign him then Mooney could be inline for a significant increase in usage in 2021 and beyond, even if the Bears bring in another WR

...
There is also the potential that the Bears look to upgrade the QB position in the offseason with both Trubisky and Foles having their struggles this season.

It has arguably been the QB play that is holding back Mooney the most, so an upgrade would be welcomed!
• Conclusion •

In redraft, Mooney isn’t someone I’m necessarily targeting for my title push, but if you have him he can be a good play when you need someone with a potential boom week in them.

It’s dynasty where Mooney becomes really interesting for me. His current value...
According to DLF, is around a 2021 late 2nd/early 3rd which I would be more than happy to give up.

I feel like now is the time to grab him, especially if he’s on a contending team. Offer a veteran player that can help them this season like a Marvin Jones/TY Hilton etc...
The break out is coming, whether it’s this season or next, but you want to grab as many shares as you can before his value takes off.

Any rumours of Robinson leaving or a new QB being targeted will make it hard to acquire him in the offseason.
