backlash for posting anything negative about some ships/characters these days is very frustrating and 100% leads to a build up of resentment that actually makes the takes that DO eventually get posted more vitriolic imo. i'm firmly on team 'we can agree to disagree and still get https://twitter.com/mysticamajestic/status/1335512924652126210
on' or at the very least 'we disagree too much to ever get on and so should probably not interact any further to avoid unpleasantness'. this is the point of unfollowing, muting, blocking, etc. there's a difference between posting some negative interpretations of a character/ship
and starting a ship war. if anything, i think it's the culture of not being ALLOWED to criticise certain ships that LEADS to the eventual ship war. ignoring little whinges and conflicting views is better than getting defensive and starting a massive, ugly, disproportionate fight
especially over something as trivial as fictional characters and ships, COME ON. but i don't think 'we should all keep our unpopular thoughts to ourselves and only post nice, palatable views that everyone can agree on' is the solution some people seem to think it is *shrug*
popular/canon ships ALWAYS cause a bit of bitterness and dissatisfaction in the unpopular/non-canon ship camp, that's just factual. but denying that bitterness a small outlet (e.g. someone moaning on their own personal twitter that they don't see the big deal about a certain
character/ship in order to find some likeminded people) is a sure-fire way for the bitterness to grow if you ask me. but that example is VERY different to posting relentless, unfounded hate in a ship or character's tags, harassing others or leaving nasty comments on fics
with that ship as the main pairing. we ALL know what that kind of troll looks like and most could give a name if asked in this fandom. to me, that's unacceptable behaviour. but posting 'i don't like this ship for x reason' isn't a grave crime and i think fandom might be a better
environment if we could all remain level-headed when we see those posts and choose not to engage with them when it's so easy to just... walk away. we all have our biases and preferences. if it's fine to talk about them ourselves, we should extend the same courtesy to others
