In dance, partner work (aka a duo or pas de deux) is most commonly seen between a man & a woman, especially in classical ballet & musical theater. Today, female duos are also commonplace within the industry.

But very, very rarely do we see duos of men. Especially athletic men doing intricate partner work. And ESPECIALLY in a “softer” style like lyrical or contemporary.
Until ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ began in 2005, we certainly didn’t see it in mainstream media.
