Movie review: Mank is a treat, although I am sure I missed half the Hollywood history stuff that other people will get. Soulful, clever movie. What a great run Gary Oldman is having.
I've been partial to Oldman since Sid and Nancy, and have been disappointed to see him making money doing bit parts in superhero movies. But in this decade, he's played George Smiley, Winston Churchill and Harry Mankiewicz.
Not everyone will like Mank. If you haven't seen Citizen Kane, watch that instead.
A footnote: Louis B. Mayer is an important part of this movie but it doesn't get into his upbringing in Saint John, N.B., something I have always wanted to know more about.
