THREAD: the many inspirations for the character Of Cersei Lannister
George R R Martin clearly took some inspiration for the character of Cersei Lannister from the Greek mythological figure Circe. Aside from the obvious connection with their names, there are a few other links between the two characters
Circe, in Greek legend, a sorceress, the daughter of Helios, the sun god, and of the ocean nymph Perse. She was able by means of drugs and incantations to change humans into wolves, lions, and swine.
Circe was also responsible for the death of her husband,The Prince of Colchis:
In some versions of the mythology, she destroyed her home on the island where she lived after she was punished for her actions:
Another big Inspiration is Queen Margaret of Anjou, wife of Henry VI
Both women were good-looking, commanding, indomitable, and fiercely devoted to their children, regardless of their flaws. Rumors of infidelity plagued the two queens. Their subjects despised them and they had few loyal followers.
In addition, both women had a permissive attitude towards their reputedly monstrous sons….
Queen Anne Boleyn, Second wife of Henry VIII
While Maybe Anne Boleyn is more similar to Margaery Tyrell,There’s definitely some undeniable similarities with Cersei
for example both women were ambitious and power hungry Married to a king who loved to enjoy himself
Biggest similarity is that both women had allegations of an incestuous relationship with their Brothers
Queen Elizabeth Woodville, Wife of Edward IV
When it comes to looks Elizabeth is probably the most similar to Cersei. She was said to be the most beautiful Queen England had ever seen.Long Blond hair with clear eyes and beautiful skin.Cersei is also said to be the most beautiful women in the seven Kingdoms.
Both were married to men who overindulge in sex, wine and food. Both king Edward and King Robert Baratheon Died in mysterious ways after going hunting or for Edward case fishing.
Lastly: Lady Macbeth From The Tragedy Of Macbeth by William Shakespeare
Both women Fulfill the trope of the power hungry women who uses violence to meet her needs. That Lust for power and Ambition drove them to kill their Husbands.
Both women descended into madness Lady Macbeth was the guilt of killing her husband and Cersei is because the Prophecy that Maggie The frog gave her is slowly becoming true. In the books Cersei is paranoid, seeing shadows of Tyrion of whom she thinks will end her life.
There’s a clear pattern between all of these women.More Ambitious and Dominant than their husbands these women would have done amazing in a time when women are allowed to rule and command without having people question their authority. This is a big theme for book Cersei
