I just had the most amazing movie experience of my life.

We drove out to Bolinas for a drive-in showing of Nomadland, the new Frances McDormand film. She was using it as a fundraiser to build affordable housing in Bolinas.
Here she is directing cars into the lot:

The movie was projected out of a back of a van. This was appropriate.

For a one-off event it was super well organized. We ordered food, it was brought to our car five minutes later, and it was delicious! Fran was walking in the rows telling people to stay in their pods “No superspreading tonight”

You tuned into a radio station. Fran was at the van, broadcasting, and introduced the event and helped raise money for housing.

The film was about a woman named Fern, who is a seasonal worker at Amazon, barely scraping by, and lives in a van.
Most of the people in the film are not actors. It’s incredible.

We’re watching a movie about being unhorsed, at a fundraiser for housing.
About people living in cars, from our car.
About people who are lonely and isolated, when we can’t be with the people all around us.
This is the most remarkable experience.

When the movie was over, Fran gave instructions on how to get out. That was helpful actually. It was confusing.

Of course some people couldn’t start their cars, so Fran (with a red headlamp) was helping them get jump started.
And of course she stood outside the gate, and we got to tell her ourselves how much we enjoyed the movie.

It was the first time I left the house in a week. It was a gorgeous drive out. Will be the last thing I get to do for a while. Frances McDormand is an astounding actor, and is an American treasure in real life. Thank you Fran!
