A lot of leftists are into the Richard Wolff style 'convince everyone to join a coop' method of building support for Socialism, which I do totally get - any leftist can agree coops are better than regular work places, there's no scary connotations, and it feels very realistic.
But generally I don't think it's what would really yield progress towards an actual Socialist mode of production, one without capital or commodity exchange whatsoever.
In reality, it's not any more special than regular class struggle and union building.
In reality, it's not any more special than regular class struggle and union building.
What makes it *feel* more realistic is that it's a reasonable, gradual change that it's easy to imagine people getting behind, and then becomming convinced from the obviously better work places that hey, maybe they don't need their bosses after all.
But history shows - and arguably even this year (to an extent anyway) - that chances for Socialism to seem a legitimate option appear through spontaneous and distributive events that bring the whole system into question at once, not gradual reform eventually ending up there.
Is a greater appreciation for worker power and an organizational base built from promoting coops helpful for these times anyway though? Yes, completely, but only in the same way promoting and fighting with unions are as well. Both promote class consciousness, both base build.
The only edge a coop driven approach might have is, as some suggest, opening an easy path for a sort of DotP to arise from which we can transition to Socialism, as greater coop presence means less power on part of the bourgeoisie, but rather worker power.
But this assumes that coops are not agents of capital all the same, and will not end up with vested interest in maintaining capital.
This is again similar to unions - neither are inherently Socialistic entities, and many *have* gone against Socialist efforts in the past.
