I’m exempting MOONLIGHT from this because that’s very much an indie in the true sense, made on the margins about the margins, not starring any movie stars and from a director no one of was checking for at the time it was made. But from SPOTLIGHT to GREEN BOOK is grim and dismal. https://twitter.com/danblackroyd/status/1335399018323562502
And GREEN BOOK, qualitatively speaking, alarmingly feels like where we’re settling qualitatively and ambition wise for american non-franchise adult dramas. And that’s not good, y’all. That’s not good at all.
With GREEN BOOK, even people who thought that movie was “fine” can’t argue that’s a good thing. Nor is it good that stuff like MARRIAGE STORY and even THE IRISHMAN are accepting a ceiling to where theatrical can take them in this climate and are going to streaming.
Which I know is an oversimplification of how “streaming” functioned in the case of both MARRIAGE STORY and THE IRISHMAN. But broadly, even though I’m glad Netflix made them accessible, their being on Netflix paints a grim picture re: the foot American cinema is putting forward
And I’m sure I sound babbly and incoherent. I’m also feeling sick so maybe that’s it. But hopefully something resembling a point is in there
