While I'm talking about QBs, I want to share some of my philosophy when scouting them.

I haven't gotten to do a lot of that since I've covered Lions and there wasn't an opportunity to draft a QB high in over a decade.
Firstly, I treat QB and backup QB as two completely separate positions. They serve different purposes for an NFL offense, and while they CAN overlap, it's often bad news when they do.
So in general, your Quarterbacks fall into two distinct categories.

1. Starting NFL quarterback
2. Not a starting NFL quarterback

Nice and clean.
Don't overthink your midrange guys like Andy Dalton (who hit) or DeShone Kizer (who didn't).

If you think they CAN start in the NFL, they're an early round pick.

If not, they're a late round pick. I don't quibble about that inbetween wasteland.
Late round QBs have a different skillset and fall into two types.

1. A developmental starter with traits that, though low probability of success, may lead to a starting NFL quarterback

2. A backup QB
1 is self explanatory.

A backup QB is someone who has played in multiple offenses. Generally comes from a football family, maybe their dad's a coach or former player. Perhaps they've played multiple positions. Their 'football IQ' is a bigger asset than anything else.
These are guys you don't want starting, generally due to a lack of physical traits. But if they have to in a pinch, they will know what you're saying when you cll plays and can direct guys to be where they're supposed to be.
Their main job is being there for QB1 and helping him with what the defense is showing.

Many of these guys get into coaching.
