I'm an Igbo girl, and it's on that premise that I want to say that; until the Igbo man stops running an independent method of providing amenities, where members of communities are constantly taxed, regardless of where they reside in Nigeria, then we have not mastered politics
And should perhaps be a bit kinder when we drag Lagos people or northerners. The Igbo man from the beginning is an independent man who provides for himself. In Chinua Achebe's "There Was a Country", he explained that because we didn't have kings that we submitted to, it was
Easier for us to dominate economically, academically and in other spheres of life. A man who is not constrained by any form of power, will spread his wings and soar. This attitude: great! Is however depriving us of true governance. Every Igbo man, if you ask him, has been
Taxed a levy from his hometown, for a school, electricity, hospital or security project. It's true that this is a huge contributing factor to the development that is visible in the eastern part of Nigeria, but this is robbing us of enjoying the dividends of governance.
Because if we can run communities individually like we are doing now, and providing amenities for ourselves, what then is the role of government? Is it just to lobby for "Igbo presidency"? Just so that we say an Igbo man is president? Does that guarantee development happening in
the east? Because if we don't start now by playing this politics right, demanding that our governors do more than they are doing, what says we will demand that from an Igbo president? Believe me, any Igbo man who becomes president, will have to please Nigeria, and the way Nigeria
Is, it is geared towards the north. My point is that we should begin to sit on our governors' necks. Our own. Let's hold them accountable. Why am I shouting like this? I have been in my small Ebonyi state for 6 days now, and I only got power once for just 2hours!
