The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya:
Our high school days play a major role in the adults we are going to become, in them we discover ourselves while interacting with the people that surround us. We are shaped and we shape others.

Those days are full of discussions, happy moments, love, obligations and freedom and all of them affect us in one way or another.
And Haruhi portrays that really well. While our characters are being swayed by Haruhi and her whims, we see them change and grow up.

Kyon learns to enjoy his youth and to step out of his comfort zone, Koizumi to open up and be more faithful to his feelings, Mikuru to be more confident in herself, Yuki that there are things that even her can enjoy and wish aside from what is expected of her
and Haruhi that a normal life with your friends can be as good as any supernatural event.
These messages of acceptance and carpe diem are the core of the show which delivers them with hilarious situations and great dynamics.

However, despite the main themes of the show are very positive, the series can fall in some toxic topics and behaviours that aren't as criticised as they should be: Haruhi's harrassment for example, it's only attacked when she goes to far but on daily basis is still problematic.
Leaving that aside, Haruhi is a series that I highly recommend. One of the most enterntaining shows and one of the best anime movies that exist, not only because of the plot but also because of how good looking is.
Both handle exceptionally well the balance between SoL and sci-fi
