Of Hull’s two medieval churches, I prefer St. Mary’s purely for its more intimate space. However, it’s facing a few issues at the moment. Here’s a quick thread.
The church was built in the early 14th century and has a lovely 16th century belltower with an archway over the footpath which forms part of Lowgate. Inside, the Victorian tiled floor is crumbling away.
The porous tiles laid in the 19th century are shot. The floor rises and falls like the tide, taking a stroll across it is like walking on rice pudding.
The movement has lifted and buckled the magnificent wrought iron floor vents. It’s trip hazard central.
