The central figure of the novel is a poet and a priest Liudas Vasaris. The contents of the novel consists of the psychological analyses of his personality. Vasaris has a tender soul, tortures himself by understanding that his poetical gift does not match his assumed duties/2
The book has some sign of the times within: one can see that priests are doing politics there. These were the times under predominantly Christian Democratic rule which allowed clericalism. Lithuania had several prominent priests who also became influential politicians/3
