I'm weary of privileged people insisting that the worst possible crime on this planet is saying, "You're an asshole, Jo, and I don't want to be associated with you."

That's not a crime. It's a boundary and a healthy one.
It's the root behind wails about "Political Correctness" and "Wokeness" and "Cancel Culture". It's the people who loved Trump for "saying what we're all thinking" and who complain that "you can't speak your mind anymore."
It's the Harper letter about authors being censored because their readers decided they're assholes. It's the millions of articles about not "shaming" people for being Republicans, for voting for Trump, for behaving recklessly during a lethal pandemic that is killing people.
It's the slew of horror movies about nice white people being unable to talk lest scary monsters descend and tear them apart. It's acting like boycotts, like deplatforming, like canceling an ill-advised book deal with a bigot are the biggest threats to freedom of speech we face.
I had people in my mentions yesterday insisting that "shaming" someone for reckless lethal behavior is outright abusive. That it's abusive to tell someone they're an asshole and you don't want anything to do with them anymore. 🙄
This fearmongering that ohmygosh you can't SAY what you're thinking anymore, someone will CALL YOU OUT for being an asshole, and isn't that the WORST has been going on since before I was born and thanks I hate it.
So we're going to get a million permutations reprinted every damn day.

Meanwhile, these same people will tell you they long for the good old frontier days where a man could shoot you over a difference of opinion. Which seems a bit more permanent than "You're an asshole, Jo, and I don't want to be associated with you." 🙄

There's allllllllmost a spot of truth here in that, given our total lack of safety nets, a total boycott of your person, products, and labor means you will actually starve. But the answer to that is UBI and safety nets, not "you can't ever stop buying Jo's books, you monster."
