Many Leavers and Trump supporters feel vulnerable and insecure in a rapidly changing post-industrial world, so like many animals when they feel threatened they want to look big and powerful. That's why they love Trump's abusive bullying and Tory 'world-beating' drivel.
Folk who are more confident in their ability to cope in the modern post-industrial world don't feel the need for this bombastic posturing, and are quite happy viewing the UK as an average middle-sized nation which can benefit from close cooperation with other nations.
We think of monarchs like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I as powerful, but in fact their grip on power was so tenuous that they had to engage in such barbarities as leaving traitors' heads impaled on London Bridge for days. Small frightened dogs trying to look fierce and dangerous.
