The flag was designed by the late Muraad Abdalla Salah AUN, a member of the Arab community in Zeila, western Somaliland. Mr. Salah designed it without the black star, which was added by the late President Egal AUN 2/4
The Shahdah - the state religion and the faith of all of Somaliland
The green - symbolizing green pasture and prosperity
The white - our peace and reconciliation
The black star - the end of the disillusion of the white star
The red - blood of our martyrs 3/4

The tricolor is in line with the earlier SNM flag that liberated the nation in 1991.
