In our last work published on #PlosOne https://dx.plos.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0241713 we describe the dental health status of #AltamuraMan. He had lost two teeth during his long life; he is also the first Neanderthal which has a bony protrusion (torus) on the palate.

The #AltamuraMan is probably the most complete and well preserved skeleton in the entire non-modern fossil record. A research project, led by @gi_manzi, funded by #MIUR and authorized by the Archaeological Superintendence, has completed the scientific investigations in situ.

The skeleton of #AltamuraMan is stuck in calcareous concretions at the bottom of a sinkhole. The Altamura man lies in a corner of a small chamber called the “Apse of man” only accessible through narrow crevices and deep passages.

We digitally acquired the skeletal elements of #AltamuraMan by using #photogrammetry, laser scanner, portable x-rays devices and medical/industrial endoscopic equipment. Thanks to videoscope probes we studied in the cave bony elements that are not directly visible.
