Donald Trump and David Shafer, chair of the GA GOP, have filed suit asking the courts to throw out the 2020 presidential results that they do not like and order a new presidential election to take place, a solution which they already know the calendar cannot allow. #gapol 1/9
Their alternative solution -- the solution they really seek from the courts -- is to ignore the clear will of Georgia voters and instead give the Republican-dominated state Legislature the power to declare that Trump has won the state's 16 electoral votes. 2/9
In the name of protecting the right to vote, they seek to wipe out millions of votes. In the name of democracy, they seek to undermine democracy. In the name of protecting the people, they seek to silence them, to substitute their desires for the desire expressed by voters. 3/9
Tellingly, in their lawsuit the minor anomalies that they allege as cause to throw out the entire presidential result somehow do not undermine the results in every other race on the ballot. They do not seek a fair result; they seek the result they believe is their birthright. 4/9
This suit will fail, just as all other such suits have failed around the country, because they have no real argument and they have no real evidence. Their anger and resentment at losing does not make them legally aggrieved parties; it makes them bad losers. 5/9
It is instructive to see people who in other settings rail against activist judges now demand that a judge set aside the clear verdict of voters, a verdict affirmed and reaffirmed in recounts. So they are not merely bad losers; they are also hypocrites. 6/9
They talk of restoring faith in the system while hysterically and in bad faith attacking both that system and the members of their own party who administer that system. After judges reject their lawsuit, they will attack those judges too. They do not care what damage they do. 7/9
And why? Because this way, the story that they can later tell each other about being robbed by a system that they themselves have created and operate is much less unsettling than the reality that the state is changing, the world is changing. 8/9
It simply cannot be that they lost. It simply cannot be that the people of Georgia rejected a president who did almost nothing in the face of a pandemic, who deceives like other breathe, who filled his administration with incompetents. Yet we did and no court can change that. 9/9
