1. He is the ONLY US President not to be descended of King John due to his Dutch ancestry
2. He survived the Petticoat Affair that got nearly all of Jackson’s cabinet kicked out by staying out of DC at the time
3. He outlived his four immediate successors
4. The Trail of Tears happened under his presidency, though Jackson did set it up
5. First president born after the Declaration of Independence
6. When he was young, his father owned a tavern that he helped in. Regulars included Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr (sir).
7. Texas wanted to return after its spell as the Lone Star State during his presidency. Van Buren said that wasn’t happening.
8. He later served as a presidential elector
9. His wife died years before he was president. He adored her, but never mentioned her in speeches or his autobiography
10. He was a good friend of write Washington Irving- one of his sons married Irving’s niece
