I am so tired of the way people misrepresent and misread The Henna Wars & Nishat's cultural ties. I really saw "Nishat is expected to have an arranged marriage with a man." Like you have to read about 3 pages to learn that even her parents didn't have an arranged marriage!!!!
Do you know how many times the words "arranged marriage" appear in The Henna Wars? A grand total of ZERO. If this is your takeaway from the book, I'm sorry to say you are simply racist.
This is such a HUGE problem I have noticed in the way people read my book. And this review is coming from an "official" space btw, not me wading into reading blogs etc.
There's obviously been this push for people to diversify their reading...but if you read diversely without any kind of critical thinking? While bringing all your biases?? That's just you projecting your racist assumptions onto books and not doing anyone any good!
People need to learn how to read diversely while actually *engaging* with the texts that they're reading. Otherwise it's all for naught.
