For the 60th anniversary of Coronation Street, I thought I'd share a thread of my top 20 favourite characters. #Corrie #Corrie60
20) Gail Rodwell (nee Potter, Tilsley, Platt, Hillman, McIntyre)

Has anyone suffered more than Gail? So much misery, and many husbands, but Gail is a survivor. And who could forget "Norman Bates with a briefcase"? Helen Worth has super comic timing and is a wonderful actress.
19) Alf Roberts

Ah Alf, or Alfie, was a proper gent. He definitely mellowed in his later years, but Bryan Mosley played him to perfection and the pairing of Alf & Audrey was genius. He made Alf into such a lovely, kind man and the Corner Shop will always be, for me, his kingdom.
18) Eddie Yeats

Such a rich character full of humour, he worked so well with Stan and Hilda. We must also remember Eddie could display kindness, like when he talked Bet out of a suicide attempt. Geoffrey Hughes lit up the show making Eddie one of the great male characters.
17) Raquel Watts

Raquel was so likeable, someone you could root for. We laughed and cried with her, such a kind-hearted, innocent soul. Raquel had great rapport with Bet, Betty and Jack behind the bar. I will always be in awe of Sarah Lancashire, one of our greatest actresses.
16) Emily Bishop

A mainstay of the street, Emily was a character who was just *there*. She had warmth and kindness, and was never afraid to speak out against injustices. Eileen Derbyshire deserves more recognition for her acting, she was so good and so natural. A true legend.
15) Alec Gilroy

One of the best male characters ever. Alec was devious, and a schemer, but so funny. Alec and Bet shouldn't have worked, but they did, and that is down to Roy Barraclough's performance. You don't get performers like him anymore; his comic timing was impeccable.
14) Betty Williams

That infectious laugh, and her hotpots, Betty was the beating heart of the Rovers. She saw many people come and go, but she always remained a constant. Although she could be sometimes prickly, you felt a comfort watching Betty. Betty Driver didn't age at all!
13) Audrey Roberts

I love Audrey. The 'noise' (hmm?), her relationship with Gail and her adoring Alfie, and banter with Claudia, Sue Nicholls lights up the screen. She is an icon who has developed Audrey from a flighty woman to a true matriarch of the street. She is fabulous!
12) Jack Duckworth

A gem. In his early days, Jack was a bit of a rogue but Bill Tarmey made Jack loveable. Bill had great comic flair (pigeons, the glasses) but was a very underrated actor. A lovely man, I'm glad Liz Dawn and Bill had one last scene together when Jack died.
11) Phyllis Pearce

Phyllis was such a raver! Man mad and always chasing Percy. That deep voice, akin to Marlene Dietrich, and the blue rinse made Phyllis an icon. She was such a fab character and provided so much humour, and that's down to Jill Summers who was also a character.
10) Blanche Hunt

Nobody could say an acerbic remark like Blanche. It takes a very special actress to make Blanche likeable, and Maggie Jones did just that. We mustn't forget that Blanche was a bit of a floozy in the 70s but she had heart and loved her family. She was wonderful.
9) Minnie Caldwell

Everyone's ideal grandma, I loved Minnie. She was so sweet and very funny. Her love of cats also extended to real life. Minnie could also silence Ena! Margot Bryant was a fab actress, nobody could cry like her and was known to be very provocative in real life!
8) Annie Walker

For me, Annie was the Duchess of Weatherfield and the Rovers was her own little kingdom. Her withering remarks, or the roll of an eye were the stuff of legend and it is testament to Doris Speed that she is still remembered. She was irreplaceable and wonderful.
7) Deirdre Barlow

Think Deirdre, think icon. Glasses, big perm, chain belt, ciggies, red wine and stuffed marrow. She was one of the most iconic characters ever with stories that gripped us all. Deirdre was the beating heart of the show for so long and I miss Anne Kirkbride.
6) Vera Duckworth

The tight bubble perm hair, endless laughter, and of course her beloved Jack. Vera was an enduring character and an icon. Liz Dawn played her to perfection, we all knew someone like Vera and she often broke your heart as well as make you roar laughing. An icon.
5) Rita Tanner

Our Kabin Queen. Always glam, often singing, and gets sozzled on vodka tonics. Not to mention the big hair! She survived Alan Bradley, and a tram almost toppling her. Barbara Knox is an incredible actress, she's the Queen of the Street and long may she reign!
4) Ena Sharples

A harridan in a hairnet who had a sharp tongue, but always looked out for her friends. I love Ena, there's been no-one like her since. The rivalry with Elsie was delicious. Violet Carson commanded the screen, and 40 years on is still fondly remembered. An icon.
3) Elsie Tanner

My god, Elsie was a goddess. Despite the bravado, she could be vulnerable longing for a decent fella. She was so glamorous, and the red hair signalled a ferocious temper, but had a heart of gold. Pat Phoenix was Hollywood, but felt so real. She was just the best.
2) Hilda Ogden

What to say about Hilda? The muriel, her 'singing' voice, the curlers, Hilda was a one off. Jean Alexander was the best actress the Street had; masterful comic timing but broke your heart, like when she wept over Stan's glasses. She was amazing, what a woman!
1) Bet Lynch

Iconic in every way, the beehive and leopard print; Bet’s humour, vulnerability, and camp essence sums up the nature of the Street. She was a survivor who always had bravado, and heart. Julie Goodyear played her perfectly and is my ultimate character. Thanks, cock!
