While many well-meaning people are siding with the protesting farmers for valid reasons, I disagree with the movement. At Milk Mantra, we work with 70k farmers & I have met 100s of them. I am not an expert but here are my thoughts after spending 10+ years in the Agri sector 1/4
For over 100 years farmers have remained in poverty. 86% of Indian farmers are small+marginal who can only sell in local markets. The change brought about by the new farm laws allows them to break free from the monopoly of APMC mandis. 2/4
Changes introduced in the new farm laws are pivotal for farmers+India to pull our Agri sector out of generational poverty+mass-market inefficiencies. At Milk Mantra we have seen first hand the transformative role of corporates/startups to uplift farmers out of poverty. 3/4
Farmers are our backbone but it’s essential to understand that the old must give way to the new especially for any impactful change to happen. I would encourage you to read this piece by @gurcharandas on why we need these farm laws in the first place
