So many people saying that it should come at no surprise that google isn't ethical. This is too simplistic and take my word with a pinch of salt as I say this with a stake in the game joining a big corporation very soon. 1/
I mean, to some extent yeah, it's obvious google is not the epitome of ethics but also with so many credible people working from inside, it felt like corporate power & critical voices could exists side by side in constant tension with a push & pull from one side to another. 2/
And the existence of people like Timnit within google was evidence that critical voices (even while constantly pushed aside) had a place within big corp. 3/
But now with what google is doing to Timnit in a broad daylight, it feels like the corporate power has swang too far crushing a prominent critical voice. Is this a reason for people to stop fighting from within? NO

I know what I said is not uncontroversial by any standard (and I have put my stake upfront) but one thing is for sure: I am NOT defending big tech in any form. Nor am I saying the only ethics work that's of value is one that comes from inside, far from it.
