More and more, I see people rec/describe my books as “unproblematic”, and while I know what they mean by that and am pleased by it, I feel a responsibility to point out that...
... I (& therefore, my work) am not unproblematic. I have biases & will spend my life unpacking them. I have written problematic things in the past, and in the future I will look at the things I write now & see issues. I think that’s how the world works & I know it’s how I work.
I also think that marginalised authors are constantly discussed in these terms, while white, straight, etc. authors are only morally analysed if they majorly F up.

I’m personally happy with my work being discussed like this. But I think people should be aware of the imbalance.
By which I mean - books do not actually have to be unproblematic, as evidenced by 90% of what’s on shelves, yet books from marginalised authors are judged as if they exist in some parallel universe where that’s not the case, & I do not like to see it.
