@spectator @afneil Thank you all. After this I won’t be commenting further on our interview. However, it is remarkable that in the 36 hours since it went live, critics have focused on 90 seconds of a 16 minutes segment. Some points on those 90 seconds. 1/7
First, I am descended from slaves and know what happened to my ancestors from the story of the women in our family. To be explicit, for example, my great great grandfather was white; and not by my great great grandmother’s choice. 2/7
Second I learnt about slavery in a classroom on the site of an old slave plantation. *Eve Leary*. Look it up. We were sent into the cane fields to work so we understood the horror of labour that killed most men within ten years. So please don’t lecture me about slavery.3/7
Third, most critics had nothing to say about other issues we discussed : racism of the 1950s/60s, black communities in the UK and the USA, whether blm is really an anticapitalist project, Malcom X’s legacy, or the special significance of Britain’s dual heritage population. 4/7
So I conclude that the Eurocentrists who insult me simply want to focus on white people’s angst. To them, the moral turpitude of dead white men is far more important than the present and future struggles of young black Britons. 5/7
So once again, we get second billing to what matters to others, and a brave movement is being reduced to begging white people to be nicer to us. Thanks, but we have better things to do, like finding jobs for people of colour……6/7
…….and yes, last year our business put more than 70 people of colour on to company and public boards. They now make the decisions that will make black lives truly matter. What did you do? 7/
